Custom link slugs (vanity URLs)

Updated:

Every share gets a random short link like /s/ab12cd34. On a paid account you can replace that ending with a word of your choosing — filemv.com/s/portfolio reads a lot better on a slide or a business card.

Setting one

Open the share dialog and use the Custom URL section. While you type, the field checks availability live. The rules:

  • 3–30 characters, lowercase letters a–z, digits and hyphens;
  • no leading/trailing hyphen and no double hyphen;
  • reserved and offensive words are rejected, and a slug someone else already uses is taken.

What changes and what does not

A custom slug is an extra address, layered on top of the share:

  • The automatic short link and the long link keep working unchanged.
  • Password, expiry and everything else about the share apply to the custom URL exactly the same.

Renaming: the old word stops working

If you change the custom slug, the previous one stops resolving immediately — anyone holding the old spelling gets a not-found page. The automatic short link is the address that never changes, so for anything printed or widely distributed, consider whether you will ever want to rename before choosing the custom form.

Clearing the custom slug simply falls back to the automatic short link.

Not on the free plan

On a free account the section shows an upgrade prompt instead. Everything else about share links — passwords, expiry, embeds — works the same on every plan.
