When do you need a silent video?
The most common reason is that something is audible in the background that should not be: a radio, a conversation, a television. The second is that music in the recording would get the video blocked or muted by a social platform — better to remove the sound up front than to argue about it afterwards. The third is wind: outdoors, a microphone often records nothing but buffeting, which is worse than silence.
Every platform accepts a silent video, and it is not a small thing for privacy either: audio often gives away more about a situation than the picture does — names, addresses, half a sentence of a conversation. If you want to share the footage but not its sound, this is the simplest way.
Why is this instant when it takes minutes elsewhere?
Because the audio and the picture live on separate tracks inside the file. Removing the audio does not require recomputing the picture — it is enough to reassemble the file with the audio track left out. The frames stay bit-for-bit the same, so there is no quality loss and nothing to encode: the operation takes as long as reading the file.
Most online muters re-encode anyway, because the general-purpose pipeline on their server always does. Here the file never leaves your browser: for MP4, MOV and WebM we reassemble it in its own format. Only containers that can hold anything (MKV, AVI) get re-encoded, and we say so above the button.
Frequently asked questions
Does the picture lose quality?
For MP4, MOV and WebM files, not at all: the frames move into the new file unchanged. For MKV and AVI the picture has to be re-encoded, because such files can contain encodings that cannot be copied into an MP4 — that costs one generation of loss, barely visible in practice.
Can I just turn the volume down instead of removing it?
Not here — this tool leaves the audio track out, and that is exactly what makes it instant and lossless. Changing the volume would mean re-encoding. If you want to edit the audio, the audio trimmer is among the audio tools.
Can I keep the audio in a separate file?
Yes, but with a different tool: “Video to MP3” extracts the audio track into its own file, also in your browser. If you need both, run both on the same video.
Does my video get uploaded anywhere?
No. The file stays in your browser. Nothing goes anywhere unless you click “Share with a link” yourself on the finished video.
