Why take the sound out of a video?
Because the video is often just the packaging. A lecture, a rehearsal recording, a voice message that arrived as a video, a concert filmed on a phone: in every one of them the sound is the value, and the picture is a dark blob taking up a hundred times the space. A 200 MB recording becomes ten megabytes, which fits in an e-mail, uploads to a podcast editor, and plays while you drive.
The other reason is listenability: your phone plays an audio file with the screen off, in your pocket, in the background, without burning data. None of that requires uploading the recording anywhere — this page does the same job on your own machine.
MP3 or original quality?
The audio inside a video is almost always AAC — already compressed. If you ask for an MP3, we unpack that and squeeze it again with a different method: this second compression always loses something, even if at 320 kbps you can barely hear it. That is what the "Original quality" option is for: it lifts the existing track out unchanged into an .m4a. It loses nothing, and it is done in seconds, because nothing has to be encoded.
Pick MP3 when the file has to go somewhere that eats nothing else — an older car radio, some upload forms, a memory stick for your grandmother. For speech 128 kbps is plenty, for music 192 is the sane default, and 320 is worth it when the recording is good to begin with and you are going to edit it afterwards.
Frequently asked questions
Which video formats does it accept?
MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV, AVI and most of what your phone or screen recorder produces. The "Original quality" option, however, is only available for MP4 and MOV files: WebM and MKV audio tracks cannot be moved into an MP4 without re-encoding.
How long does it take?
Lifting the original track out takes about as long as reading the file — seconds. Encoding to MP3 is around half a minute for a ten-minute recording on a desktop machine, and several times that on a phone.
Is there a watermark or a daily limit?
Neither, and there never will be: since the processing runs on your own machine, it costs us nothing how often you use it.
Why is the video's picture not in it?
Because this tool exists specifically to save the audio track. If you need the picture too, only in a smaller file, the video compressor is the tool for that.
