What is an audio trimmer for?
The most common case is a ringtone: twenty or thirty seconds out of a song, starting exactly where the chorus kicks in. The second is cutting off the dead weight — the first half minute of a voice message is coughing and fumbling, the start of a recorded lecture is the bell. The third is the excerpt: the ninety seconds of an interview you actually want to quote.
All three need you to see where you are in the recording — which is why there is a waveform. Silence is flat and loud passages are tall, so the structure of a song is recognisable as a drawing, and you drag the handle to where the picture changes. You can type the exact timecode afterwards.
iPhone ringtones: why 40 seconds?
Because iOS will not accept a longer .m4r — and, more annoyingly, it does not refuse it with an error message: it simply never shows up under Sounds. That is why there is a hard limit at 40 seconds here: better that we say it now than that you go hunting for it on the phone.
An .m4r is not a separate format anyway, it is an AAC audio file (.m4a) with a different extension — which is exactly what this tool produces. Do not pick it for Android, though: there the plain MP3 is the way, copied into the Ringtones folder.
Frequently asked questions
Does trimming hurt the quality?
From MP3 to MP3 with no fades, not at all: the original data is carried over unchanged. As soon as you ask for a fade or make a ringtone it has to be re-encoded — there is some loss there, but at 192 kbps it is practically inaudible.
Why do I need the fades?
Because a section cut out of the middle of a song starts loud, mid-phrase, and ends the same way — which is alarming as a ringtone. The half-second fade in and out is what makes it listenable.
Can I cut out several sections?
One at a time. If you need more, cut the first, download it, then start again with the same recording using the "Process another file" button.
Which files does it accept?
MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, OGG, Opus and FLAC — practically everything your browser can play. If you are starting from a video, extract the audio from it first.
