When is a trim enough?
Often the problem is not that the video is big but that it is long. You need a minute and a half out of ten: the goal, the sentence, the point of the demo. Cut away the rest and the problem goes with the file size — and what remains keeps its quality untouched, because nothing was re-encoded.
That makes trimming a better answer to “the video is too big” than compressing, more often than you would think. The two tools also chain: trim the section first, then compress it if it still does not fit.
Fast or exact?
A compressed video is not made of frames but of a few complete pictures — the keyframes — and the differences between them. That is why playback can only start on a keyframe. A fast cut therefore re-encodes nothing and simply copies the existing data: a 200 MB file is done in seconds, but the start jumps back to the nearest earlier keyframe.
An exact cut decodes the whole section and starts precisely where you asked — in exchange it takes about as long as a compression. The automatic setting picks the fast path when the start is at the very beginning of the video: every recording has a keyframe there, so the fast mode is not only fast but exact as well.
Frequently asked questions
Does trimming cost quality?
In fast mode, none at all: the original frames move into the new file unchanged. The exact mode re-encodes, so there is some loss, but we have set it to a practically invisible level.
Can I cut out several sections?
One at a time. If you need more, cut the first, download it, then start again with the same file using the “Process another video” button.
What kind of file do I get?
An MP4 with a header optimised for fast start — it begins playing immediately even when shared as a link, rather than only after the whole download.
Why does it not start exactly where I set it?
Because you cut in fast mode, and the start jumped to the nearest keyframe. Switch to “Exact”: the start will then be frame-accurate, at the cost of taking longer.
