Splitting or extracting?
The same operation under two names. “Splitting” usually means turning a long document into one file per page — that is what the zip output gives you. “Extracting” is when only pages 12 and 13 of a 40-page contract are needed: that is the single-PDF output, with the selected pages in their original order.
The original file is untouched: the tool copies, it does not cut. The extracted pages are exactly as they were in the source — the text stays searchable and the resolution does not change.
How to say what you need
The field understands the same notation every print dialog does: “1-3, 7, 9-” means the first three pages, the seventh, and then everything from the ninth to the end. “-4” runs from the very beginning to the fourth. Commas and spaces both work as separators.
If you would rather see what you are picking, click the sheets: the field picks up the selection by itself, and the selection follows the field. They are the same thing.
Frequently asked questions
Does my original file change?
No. The browser only reads it and builds a new file from it; it never touches the original. It never leaves your machine either.
Why are only 60 previews shown?
Because every preview is a separately rendered image, and on a document of several hundred pages that would use more memory than the operation itself. Past page sixty the page-number field takes over — and that works on a document of any length.
Does it work with password-protected PDFs?
PDF to images does: it asks for the password and uses it only in memory — we never store it. Merge and split cannot modify an encrypted document, so take the password off it first with the password remover.
How does the file get smaller?
If only a few pages of a large document are needed, extracting them helps a great deal on its own: the images on the pages you dropped never enter the new file. The compression itself does not change, because the page content is not re-encoded.
