What does this tool actually do?
It takes a finished mix — the single track inside an MP3 — and tries to make the vocals and everything else audible separately. You get two files: the vocals, holding the sung voice, and the backing track, holding every instrument. The two add back up to exactly the original song, because the backing track is produced by subtracting the estimated vocals from your own file. Nothing invented ever ends up in it: whatever the model leaves behind in the vocal is what you will hear in the backing track too.
This is not the old phase-cancellation trick, which subtracts whatever is panned to the centre and takes the bass and the kick drum with it. Here a neural network does the work, one that learned from thousands of songs what a singing voice looks like on a spectrogram. The processing runs on your own machine; the music never leaves your browser.
How clean will it be? — honestly
Good, but not studio-clean, and you are better off knowing that first. On a cleanly recorded pop song with a well-separated vocal the split is convincing: the backing track barely hints at the voice, and the vocal file barely hints at the band. Where the model struggles: heavy reverb and delay (the tail of the voice often stays in the backing track), dense choirs and stacked harmonies, high notes sitting next to distorted guitars and cymbals, and very low-bitrate sources.
One technical limit worth knowing: the model only works with the lower part of the spectrum, up to about 14.7 kHz. That makes the top end of the separated vocal file duller than the original's. It does not apply to the backing track — that is the original song minus the vocals, so it keeps its full bandwidth.
How long does it take?
It depends on whether your browser can use the graphics card. If it can (a recent Chrome or Edge on a desktop), a three-minute song is done in about ten seconds. If it cannot, the work runs on the processor and takes roughly as long as the song itself — around three minutes — and more than that on a weaker machine or a phone. We always print the estimate for your own machine above the button, before you start.
The music is processed in 12-second pieces and the progress bar counts them — which is why you can see exactly how far it has got, and why you can stop it at any moment.
Frequently asked questions
Is my music uploaded anywhere?
No. The file stays in your browser and the separation runs on your own processor or graphics card. The only thing we send you is the model — and after the first run that lives on your machine too.
Why only two tracks — where are the drums and the bass?
Because every further track is another separate model — another 28 MB download and another full pass over the song. Karaoke and practice need the vocals/backing split, so that is the one we do properly.
Can I put the finished karaoke track on YouTube?
Separating a song does not change who owns it. A recording with the vocals removed is still the work of its writers and its label, and content-matching systems will find it just the same. Whatever you make here comes with the same rights as the original — that part is yours to sort out.
Is there a watermark, a daily limit or a sign-up?
None of the three, and there will not be: because the work runs on your machine, it costs us nothing how often you use it.
